In Cookham Wood Prison, she obtained her BA Humanities degree, in the Arts Faculty of the Open University (1980). Again, these hard won achievements were immediately interpreted as her manipulating the authorities to get parole. Myra was quoted as saying, âAfter all, what will it matter to the decision-makers that Iâve obtained a degree, when I wasnât sent to prison because I was illiterate?â
Her Open University enrolment had been discussed at Ministerial level and it was at this point that Myra realised she was being treated as a special case, and it was this that prompted the somewhat bizarre âescape plotâ2 (see Timeline).
Below I give a few examples of Myra trying to express her deep regret. Apart from her article in The Guardian (18 December 1995), where she explained why she found it difficult to show remorse publicly, one reason she had not shown any repentance earlier in public can be found in a fragment of a letter from her:
